Everything You Need in One Place... the Heritage Toolkit

In recognising the critical support volunteers give to our sector, it’s vital that we also understand how important it is to be able to attract and retain a diverse range of people, and ensure they are well supported and trained.

Our free access Toolkit contains templates, sample policies and information sheets to help both the heritage organisations in the Hub and their volunteers to fulfil their potential. You'll need to create an account to access to Toolkit and we hope you find it useful – we'd love to hear your feedback.

Quick document access

Use these sections for quick access to the tools you need. Along with examples of documents, you will also find information, links and support throughout.

Plan to Involve Volunteers

Volunteers are at the heart of our heritage attractions. Some sites are entirely reliant on volunteers and are dependent on their enthusiasm and commitment. We are passionate about what volunteers can bring to an organisation.

Supervise, Support & Develop

It's vital that volunteers receive the support and supervision they need to help them to make a useful contribution, and to ensure that they have a positive experience.

Develop Policy & Process

Your volunteering policy should describe the role of volunteers in the organisation and the policies and procedures that will define how volunteers should be supported. Template policies and forms to help are here.

Recruit & Welcome Volunteers

Volunteer recruitment can be broken down into a number of manageable steps. This is where you'll find recruitment best practice, including example documentation to adapt to your needs.

Value & Recognise Contributions

There are many approaches to making volunteers feel involved, valued and recognised. Most of the techniques suggested are simple and have zero cost; they are just about saying ‘thank you’ and ensuring volunteers have engaging tasks to complete.
